What to Expect

Early Birds - Fridays - Spring-Summer Term - 25th April to 18th July The Early Birds group at Wild Wood Bristol Forest School is intended for nursery age children, 18 months to 2.5 years old. Children attend the weekly sessions with their parents or carers in support. Our woodland playground, is designed to encourage the children to play, explore and investigate the wonders of this beautiful woodland, in the company of other families. For many younger children this may well be their first encounter with a vast and differing woodland environment. Attending the sessions the children gain a first-hand experience of nature, weather and seasonality. Sessions encourage the children to explore the undulating site, becoming more familiar with woodland plants and animals, and play socially with others in the group. Throughout the term, children grow in confidence and independence as they become more familiar with the site and the group's routines. Though each session has a planned theme, ultimately the sessions respond to the children's interests and their enquiries. Familiar activities help the children to follow their own interests, may it be playing in the den, cooking up a mud cake in the woodland kitchen, or searching the site during a scavenger hunt. Stream activities and opportunities to use tools help the children to develop their fine and gross motor skills. A communal campfire is something that sets our Forest School apart. All sessions include making a campfire and having a hot chocolate.  Where time allows, we will also prepare and cook something over the fire.  In the past this has included smores, bread-on-sticks and popcorn, among others.  The session ends with a story, while they enjoy their hot chocolate and light snack.
